Sinhala Language Course: Comprehensive Lesson Guide

Course Philosophy

This course is designed to tackle the specific challenges of Sinhala, namely the distinct alphabet and the significant difference between spoken (colloquial) and written (literary) Sinhala. The Beginner levels focus heavily on Spoken Sinhala for immediate communicative ability, while slowly building reading skills. Intermediate and Advanced levels bridge the gap to literary Sinhala.

BEGINNER LEVEL 1: The Foundation

Goal: Recognize the basic alphabet, read simple words, understand basic sentence structure (SOV), and manage very simple daily interactions.

Module 1.1: The Sinhala Alphabet (Hodiya) - Part 1

• Topic 1: Introduction to Sounds: The concept of phonetic languages.
• Topic 2: The Pure Vowels (Swara):
• Learning the shapes and sounds of the main vowels: අ (a), ආ (aa), ඇ (æ), ඈ (ææ), ඉ (i), ඊ (ii), උ (u), ඌ (uu), එ (e), ඒ (ee), ඔ (o), ඕ (oo).
• Topic 3: Basic Consonants (Vyanjana):
• Focus on unaspirated, common consonants.
• Key Concept: Every consonant letter has an inherent "a" sound built-in.
• Examples: ක (ka), ග (ga), ත (ta), ද (da), ප (pa), බ (ba), ම (ma), ස (sa), හ (ha).
• Topic 4: The Magic of "Pillam" (Vowel Signs) - Stage 1:
• How to change the inherent "a" sound of a consonant to another vowel sound using diacritics.
• Examples:
• ක (ka) + ් (hal kireema - removes vowel) = ක් (k)
• ක (ka) + ා (æla pilla - aa) = කා (kaa)
• ක (ka) + ි (ispilla - i) = කි (ki)
• ක (ka) + ු (paapilla - u) = කු (ku)
• Practice: Reading simple 2-3 letter words using these combinations (e.g., මම - mama (I/me)).

Module 1.2: Building Blocks of Vocabulary

• Topic 1: Greetings & Essentials: Ayubowan (Hello/May you live long), Ow (Yes), Næhæ (No/Not), Sthuthi (Thank you).
• Topic 2: Basic Colors: Red (rathu), Blue (nil), Green (kola), Yellow (kaha), White (sudu), Black (kalu).
• Topic 3: Numbers (0-20): Counting and recognizing numerals.
• Topic 4: Family : Family & Realtives in Sinhala( Amma, Thaththa, Aiya, Akka etc.
• Topic 5: Animals: Animal names in Sinhala

Module 1.3: Sentence Structure & Present Tense

• Topic 1: The Golden Rule: SOV vs SVO.
• English structure: Subject + Verb + Object (I eat rice).
• Sinhala structure: Subject + Object + Verb (I rice eat).
• Visual: [I] [eat] [rice] $\rightarrow$ [මම] [බත්] [කනවා] (Mama bath kanava).
• Topic 2: Simple Present Tense Verbs:
• Introducing common verbs in their present tense form ending in "-nava" (kanava - eating, bonava - drinking, yanava - going).
• Topic 3: Creating Basic Sentences:
• Combining pronouns, nouns, and verbs.
• Example: මම වතුර බොනවා (Mama vathura bonava) - I drink water.

Module 1.4: My World

• Topic 1: Simple Introductions: Self Introduction
• Topic 2: Introduce someone else: Using "Mey" (This is...).
• Example: මේ මගේ අම්මා (Mey mage amma) - This is my mother.
