What are Pillam?
In Sinhala, consonants by default have an inherent "a" sound. Pillam (පිල්ලම්) are diacritic marks added to consonants to change their vowel sound. For example, ක (ka) becomes කා (kaa), කි (ki), කු (ku), etc. when different pillam are applied.
Aakaaraya/ aelapilla
This Pillama is used to indicate 'aa' vowel sound in a consonant.
Aekaraya/aedaya
Thus pillam indicates 'ඇ' vowel sound in a consonant.
Aeekaaraya/ digu aedaya
This pilla indicates the vowel 'ඈ' sound in a consonant.
Ikaaraya
This pillam indicates 'ඉ' vowel sound in a consonant.
