Introduction

One of the most powerful tools in your Sinhala learning journey is the particle 'da' (ද). In Sinhala, the word order for a question is identical to a statement. To turn any sentence into a question, you simply attach 'da' to the end. It functions much like a question mark in English, but it is a required spoken and written element.

The Grammar Rule

In English, we often change the word order or add auxiliary verbs like 'do' or 'does' to form a question. In Sinhala, you keep the sentence structure exactly the same as a declarative sentence and just place 'da' at the very end. This rule applies to present, past, and future tenses, making it incredibly versatile.

Example Sentences

  1. Oya bath kanawa da? - Are you eating rice? (pronunciation: o-ya bat ka-na-wa da)
  2. Oya gedara giya da? - Did you go home? (pronunciation: o-ya ge-da-ra gi-ya da)
  3. Oya heta enawa da? - Are you coming tomorrow? (pronunciation: o-ya he-ta e-na-wa da)
  4. Meeka oyaage potha da? - Is this your book? (pronunciation: mee-ka o-yaa-ge po-tha da)
  5. Oya sindu kiyanawa da? - Are you singing a song? (pronunciation: o-ya sin-du ki-ya-na-wa da)
  6. Aya eyaawa dekka da? - Did she see him? (pronunciation: a-ya e-yaa-wa dek-ka da)
  7. Oya tea bonawa da? - Are you drinking tea? (pronunciation: o-ya tea bo-na-wa da)
  8. Eya paniwidayak ewwe da? - Did he send a message? (pronunciation: e-ya pa-ni-wi-da-yak ew-we da)
  9. Api heta yannada? - Shall we go tomorrow? (pronunciation: a-pi he-ta yan-na-da)
  10. Oyaata mahansi da? - Are you tired? (pronunciation: o-yaa-ta ma-han-si da)

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Do not try to change the verb form or move it to the front of the sentence. Keep the subject-object-verb order intact. Also, remember that 'da' is attached to the final word, not floating separately.

Practice Tips

Try taking five statements you know in Sinhala and add 'da' to the end. Say them out loud with a rising intonation to get used to the natural flow of Sinhala questions.

Key Takeaways

  • 'da' is the universal question marker in Sinhala.
  • It is placed at the end of the sentence.
  • The grammar of the statement does not change when turning it into a question.
