Prepositions of Place and Time (in, on, at)

A preposition is a small word that shows the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and another word in the sentence. Prepositions tell us about place (where), time (when), and direction. The three most common and most confusing prepositions in American English are in, on, and at. PREPOSITIONS OF PLACE: - in = inside an enclosed space or a large area (a city, country, room, container). Examples: in a box, in a room, in New York, in the United States. - on = touching a surface. Examples: on the table, on the wall, on the floor, on a page. - at = a specific point or location. Examples: at the door, at the bus stop, at school, at home. PREPOSITIONS OF TIME: - in = longer periods (months, years, seasons, centuries, parts of the day). Examples: in January, in 2025, in the summer, in the morning. - on = specific days and dates. Examples: on Monday, on July 4th, on my birthday, on the weekend. - at = specific clock times and some expressions. Examples: at 3:00, at noon, at night, at the moment. QUICK RULE (General to Specific, big to small): - Place: in a country -> on a street -> at an address. - Time: in a year -> on a day -> at a time. Remember: American English uses 'on the weekend' (British English uses 'at the weekend').
